The Cost To Be Thin

The last 5 days or so, Jeff and I have been doing the South Beach Diet. It is a diet that my doctor recommended when I was trying to get pregnant with Callie, so since we would like to have another baby, I decided to make the diet a first defense instead of the last resort.

The basic concept of the diet is that in the first two weeks you eat no bread, no fruit and limited dairy. You have to eat protein with every meal (and snacks too), and at least a 1/2 cup of veggies with breakfast, 2 cups with lunch and 2 with dinner.

I am pleased to report that after 5 days, Jeff and I have each lost about 5 lbs. Yep, it feels good! I would love to keep losing weight this quickly, and when I have just finished a "no sugar added" fudgesicle I think it is possible. Then I look at what I have left to cook for dinner... not too much. Then I think about I will have the pleasure of eating for breakfast tomorrow--eggs (bleh), while I serve Callie my favorite, cereal. Then I see recipes like this, and I want nothing more than to be a glutton.

Since Monday I have spent about twice as much $$ on groceries as normal, and we are running out of approved food. My time spent in the kitchen has about quadrupled, and Jeff's has increased infinitely (as he has COOKED his own breakfast two days in a row).

Can you infer where I'm going with this.

I am wimping out. I have lots of excuses. And they are all good ones. I want to be thin, but I think I gotta find a new way.

Ugh. I hate how hard it is to get thin. Good luck with finding another method. It's times like these where I almost wish I could be anorexic. . . but don't worry - I like eating too much. :-P

I am in the process of getting down to my high school weight. I know, crazy. So I did some research. I found a book called Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. I am still reading it and haven't officially started it, but I am loving what the author has to say. It isn't a quick fix, but it will be a long term fix. Check it out. It's worth it.

My motivation comes from being weighed so often at the drs. office right now. Today I rededicated myself to not eating sweets until the baby is born (except on Sundays and our Anniversary, if the baby isn't here yet). This time (you know, since I made the same resolve this past Monday that lasted a whole 3 hours), I actually told Gary about my resolve. We'll see how far I make it...
Hey, you've got to figure that you are eating at the reunion tomorrow and there is no way the $30 food is following the South Beach diet so your diet would have been ruined anyways...right.. right?
I had success after Anna when I tried building up my muscles. Apparently muscle burns fat.

ABS DIET!! I swear by it. He's got a ton of books, with a ton of recipes that are super easy. To me, it is the gospel of eating right and losing weight - it just made sense when I read it. Good luck!!

Well, here are the only suggestions I have for making your time in the kitchen shorter when on South Beach. Make a bunch of egg breakfasts at the same time. Divide and store- when you hit your time to add some carbs you can have on the go breakfast burritos. Oh- and did you ever figure out how to make dried beans taste good? My new method- the crock pot. Soak them overnight as usual then load them in the slow cooker with water. 5 hours for black beans, 4 for others. Last hour add salt, onion cilantro whatever you like and it will taste much better!
